Spurs Showing Interest in Knicks’ Evan Fournier

Per Ian Begley of SNY.tv, the Spurs have expressed interest.

Fournier could be a natural fit, given that he shares an agent with fellow Frenchman and No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama, as Begley noted. Fournier has also spoken recently about being intrigued by the idea of playing for the Spurs.

As for the Knicks, Fournier fell out of the rotation and has been the subject of trade rumors since before the deadline in February. He appeared in just 27 games last season, averaging career-lows of 6.1 points and 31 percent shooting on 3-pointers.

It’s also hard to envision rival teams wanting his $18.9 million contract, though there’s a team option on the second year of the deal. So it could be viewed as expiring.

San Antonio doesn’t have the financial wiggle room to squeeze in Fournier’s salary, so they would have to send some players to the Knicks, Begley wrote. New York may be open to attaching draft picks to a Fournier deal if it meant getting a rotational player back in return, he added.

For the record, Fournier performed admirably when given the opportunity in the 2021-22 season — recording averages of 14.1 points and 2.1 assists while starting all 80 games in which he appeared.
